Product Review: WowE Lifestyle Stainless Steel Tongue Cleaner

Product Review: WowE Lifestyle Stainless Steel Tongue Cleaner

What: WowE Lifestyle Stainless Steel Tongue Cleaner

Admittedly, I have never thought about using a tongue cleaner before. I just use my toothbrush. I wanted to try it out and see what kind of effect it would have on my mouth and breath. I’m pretty diligent about brushing my teeth and currently use David’s Natural Toothpaste to stay fresh and so clean, clean, clean. I have not moved on to a bamboo toothbrush just yet as my electric and the brush heads are still fully usable and intact.

For full transparency, this product was provided for FREE in exchange for a review. The review is my own.

First, why even use a tongue cleaner?

For me, I’ve been using my toothbrush to brush my tongue ever since I can remember. After all, your tongue is the primary mechanism that pushes food around in your mouth. It is bound to get food stuck to it and the way the tongue is designed is that it is setup with these taste buds that must be kept moist at all times. With moisture comes bacteria. The average tongue is around 10cm and I am sure you can recount where your tongue has been. If not, then it behooves all of us to clean it once in awhile. Food debris, desquamated epithelial cells and bacteria and other tooth pathogens often form a visible coating on the tongue which causes bad breath and this is why a tongue cleaner can come in handy.

Of course, using a tooth brush helps, but a toothbrush is not designed for the tongue so it’s bristles do not get to where it needs to go.

Tongue hygiene has been practiced for centuries in Africa, Arabia, Europe, South America and many eastern and oriental cultures. Western civilizations placed less emphasis on tongue cleaning and between the 15th and 19th century, tongue cleaning was primarily practiced by those who were affluent. I bet you didn’t think there was all that info on the tongue cleaner did you?

With my Wowe Tongue Cleaner, I first sterilized mine in hot water just to ensure it was fully clean. I am sure you can wash it with dish soap as well just as you would any other stainless steel utensil like a fork or spoon, but because this was the first time I was using it, I wanted to have that extra clean.

Verdict

  • It’s a buy.

  • It’s an interesting change to your dental hygiene routine, but one that you can use to supplement what you are already doing. If you’ve never brushed your tongue, this will be a strange feeling at first, but you eventually get used to it. Observe too if you see any changes in the tongue color over time as you remove dead bacteria, food, etc. from it.

  • I recommend doing the tongue scrape every other day just so that you don’t over scrape your taste buds.

  • Make sure to only scrape your tongue and not other parts of your mouth. I’ve read others using it on their teeth or gums or tonsils and this is definitely not designed for that.

  • Remember that mouth health is important for overall health so keeping excellent dental hygiene can go along way to keeping you health overall, plus good breath is also always appreciated.

  • It’s easy to store and doesn’t take up that much space in our bathroom.

Have you tried this product? What are your thoughts?
