My Favorite Cookie Scones Recipe with Cinnamon or Orange Icing

My Favorite Cookie Scones Recipe with Cinnamon or Orange Icing

Homemade cookies are the best kind of cookies.

This recipe as a straight copy and paste from Marcy Goldman's book "A Passion for Baking."  There is nothing healthy about it, but in moderation, everything is good.  Check more of Marcy's recipes on her site: BetterBaking.com.

I only make these once a year during the holidays. It's the only recipe that I follow to the T. No changes, no substitutions. They are excellent with coffee or tea.

Scones

Makes 15 - 20 scones or 36 miniatures

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder

  • 3/4 cup of unsalted butter, cut into chunks

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 2 large eggs

  • 3/4 to 1 cup heaving whipping cream or whipping cream

Cinnamon Dip

  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted

  • 1-2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

  • 2 cups of confectioner's sugar

  • Whipping cream as required to get consistency

Orange Dip

(note the original recipe only had Cinnamon, but I like Orange so I just split the Dip recipe into two)

  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 teaspoons of orange extract

  • 2 cups of confectioner's sugar

  • Whipping cream as required to get consistency

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a food processor or Kitchen Aid stand, add flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder and blend briefly. Add butter and pulse to make a coarse, grainy mixture.

  3. Turn out mixture into a large bowl. Make a well in center and stir in vanilla, eggs, and whipping cream to make a soft dough. If it is stiff, add more cream.

  4. Using an ice cream scooper, deposit 15-20 scones on prepared baking sheets or use a smaller 2-tablespoon cookie scoop and deposit 3 dozen baby scones.

  5. Bake until scones are puffy and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

  6. Meanwhile for Cinnamon or Orange Dip, whisk together all ingredients until you have a thick but drippy glaze. Add more confectioner's sugar or cream as required.

  7. Cool scones to warm and then dip into Cinnamon or Orange Dip. Dip scones again once topping is set.

I like to put these into an old Christmas tin that I've had since high school. They fit perfectly and add a good presentation for homemade cookies. Homemade cookies are a great zero waste and minimalist gift option.
